Identify the two water roles
State which source prepares polymer stock and which forms part of the process suspension. They may be the same source or vary independently. Label samples with collection point and time, and distinguish measured chemistry from an assumed average.
Conductivity helps describe a condition but does not identify every dissolved constituent. Avoid asking for a universal salt-resistant grade without explaining the feed and separation requirement. A nonionic name is not proof of insensitivity to water chemistry.
Separate preparation screening from application screening
Prepare the same candidate under matched conditions when comparing make-down water sources. Keep powder mass or liquid basis, concentration, mixing and maturation visible. Observe usable stock before assigning an application difference to the polymer.
Then compare treatment response on representative feed at explicit dose units. If water and feed are changed at once, the result may not distinguish preparation from process chemistry. Retain credible operating variation rather than constructing an arbitrary salt challenge and calling it a plant guarantee.
Specify the qualified envelope
Ask the supplier which codes and instructions support the proposed comparison. Preserve the accepted water conditions, stock behavior and separator result. Identify what remains untested and what change should trigger another sample review.
Use the nonionic product discussion only where the process rationale supports it, and compare other justified candidates. Connect preparation demand with the quote before approving bulk supply. A successful trial should carry its water limitations into the purchasing record.
Keep these purchase records
| Decision | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Water identity | Make-down and process sources have separate locations, times and measured data. |
| Control | Preparation and treatment comparisons change identifiable variables. |
| Purchase scope | Accepted water conditions and untested variation remain attached to the selected grade. |
