Use the exact product guidance
Request storage and handling instructions for the proposed grade, form and container. An unopened storage period does not automatically establish an opened-package life. Powder and liquid formulations require their own procedures.
Record opening date, location and relevant exposure or damage. Follow the product SDS and responsible plant procedure for questioned material. Do not assume additional agitation or dilution restores a compromised product.
Preserve identity during use
Keep code and lot identification with the remaining material. If approved transfer or repackaging is necessary, retain the same handling information and traceability. Avoid combining unrelated leftovers merely to clear storage space.
Check how long a package normally remains open at the actual use rate. A nominal saving from a larger unit can disappear if material is difficult to feed consistently or stays under unsuitable conditions for extended periods.
Separate stock condition from application change
If a comparison is appropriate, use an identified reference and controlled preparation. Record stock behavior and the required separator result. Visual appearance alone cannot certify every relevant property, while higher consumption alone cannot prove storage damage.
Use package selection and usable-stock planning to revise the purchasing quantity. Keep held or uncertain material outside the available-stock count until the receiving or operating review resolves its status. Confirm future package options rather than assuming custom sizes or a universal storage guarantee are available.
Keep these purchase records
| Decision | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Instructions | Product, form and container have an applicable opened-use handling plan. |
| Identity | Remaining material retains its code, lot and exposure record. |
| Inventory | Only accepted material of credible condition enters the usable-stock calculation. |
