THE BUYING GUIDES

How Much Polyacrylamide Should a First Order Include?

The first order should answer a trial requirement and a supply requirement without confusing the two.

Define the stage of approval

A laboratory sample establishes which candidates deserve further work. It does not establish annual consumption or prove that a truckload will be used successfully. Distinguish a sample set, an equipment trial and the first routine delivery in the purchasing request. Ask the supplier which quantities and packaging are available for each stage.

Identify the operator responsible for the trial and the period when representative feed is available. Material delivered before the plant can test it occupies storage without reducing technical uncertainty. Agree the test window before making the trial shipment larger.

Calculate trial material from an explicit basis

Estimate consumption from the intended operating hours and a defensible starting range, then review that estimate against actual measurements as the trial progresses. If using kilograms of product per dry tonne, combine it with dry-solids throughput, not wet sludge tonnage. If the calculation is volume-based, keep density and concentration assumptions visible.

For illustration only, a planned run using 2 kilograms of supplied product per hour for 20 operating hours would consume 40 kilograms before any separately justified allowance. Those numbers are arithmetic inputs, not a recommended PAM dose. Replace them with the approved plant estimate and explain any reserve for repeat runs or preparation losses.

Check the physical constraints

Translate the requested mass into packages and storage positions. Check the unloading route, package handling and make-down system. A trial requiring a small amount may not justify a package that remains open for a long period. Ask about suitable package options without assuming that custom sizes or very small orders are available.

Use product-specific storage instructions and inspect the intended location before delivery. Buying extra material as insurance can create a different risk if temperature, moisture exposure or time in storage are poorly controlled. An order allowance should have a reason and a responsible owner.

Separate the reorder decision from trial delivery

Set a review point for technical acceptance, usable stock and confirmed replenishment timing. If the trial does not meet the agreed endpoint, avoid treating remaining inventory as a reason to skip further evaluation. If it succeeds, convert measured consumption into a routine plan using the actual operating schedule.

Send the quantity estimate with the quotation request, and explain whether it is provisional or approved. The replenishment checklist then connects the first successful run to the next order. Request confirmation of minimum order, lead time and package availability for your own requirement; no universal figure replaces that discussion.
